The swell looks pretty active as we head into this coming weekend. Unlike the last several days, we'll finally get some new swell moving in that should produce some solid 4-5, possibly even 6 ft waves in some of our best spots. The main swell bringing these conditions will come from a system that's currently just east of New Zealand. That's right, a nice clean Southern Hemisphere ground swell is in the forecast for this weekend.

The storm system will send a pulse of wave energy towards us at the direction of about 210 degrees, which is almost as perfect as it can get. We'll end up receiving that maximum amount of energy this system has to offer because of this. The swell originally starts off from the southwest on Friday morning, but waves don't become "impressive" until Friday evening.

From there, waves only continue growing through the rest of the weekend. In addition to the southwest ground swell, we'll also see a northwest wind swell kick up on Saturday providing an additional boost to wave height. Even with the wind swell, our periods and overall wave quality should go largely unaffected. 16 to possibly even 18 second periods are expected throughout the entire weekend.

Winds and weather look pretty typical for this weekend with no rain or otherwise adverse weather expected. The only thing to worry about is somewhat strong onshore winds in the evenings. The mornings look calm for the most part, but the evenings are going to see onshore winds at around 10-15 mph. Sunday looks the windiest with Friday being the least windy.

BEST BETS

- Sunday morning, along our southwest facing shorelines, will see beautiful conditions with 4-5 foot waves, 16 second periods, and calm winds.

- Sunday evening will have even larger waves although an onshore wind will develop in along southwest facing shores.

- Saturday morning looks like another solid surf opportunity with calm winds, long periods, and 4-foot waves coming in from the southwest.

FRIDAY

We'll start the forecast period off with pretty similar conditions to what we've experienced so far this week. Waves come in from the southwest with heights generally staying between 1 and 2 feet. There will, however, be a a few spots where you may be able to catch 3-footers, mainly around Oceanside and possibly along the south-facing shore of Ventura County.

The southwest ground swell grows throughout the morning and into the afternoon. This will result in a pretty solid surfing opportunity. 3-foot waves become more widespread by the afternoon with 4-footers starting to pop up by the evening. Periods look great at around 16 seconds. Winds become onshore in the afternoon and evening at around 10 mph after a calm start to the day.

SATURDAY

Waves grow through Friday night and by Saturday morning, we should have a solid stretch of 4-foot waves between Oceanside and San Clemente. Some beaches around San Diego, such as Coronado Beach, will see waves as high as 5 feet! All around, this looks like another great surfing opportunity along our south and southwest facing beaches. Winds stay light and periods actually increase to 18 seconds for everyone.

As mentioned in the overview, waves grow even further as we head into Saturday afternoon. 4-foot heights will become more widespread with isolated pockets of 5-foot waves starting to develop around Oceanside. We'll also see 4-foot heights develop around Ventura and waves could be as high as 6 feet for Coronado Beach. Again, periods stay nice at 16 seconds for the evening but an offshore wind will develop at around 10-15 mph.

SUNDAY

Sunday morning will probably have the best conditions, not just for this weekend, but for the past several weeks. Winds stay calm to light and we're looking at beautiful southwest ground swell producing 4-5-foot waves along the entire coastline between Dana Point and Encinitas. Venice Beach should see 3-4 ft waves with Ventura likely getting anything between 3 and 5-feet. Periods still look excellent at 16 seconds so if you can, definitely plan to surf Sunday morning.

By the afternoon, waves will have increased by another couple of inches to near a half foot. The largest waves are still expected to occur along Coronado Beach where 6 and possibly even 7-foot heights are expected. All other good locations, Oceanside, San Clemente, Ventura, and Venice Beach, continue to see 4–5-foot heights. Winds pick up from the onshore direction at around 15 mph but periods still look great at 16 seconds!
